UNIVERSITY OF GHANA DID NOT CHARGE FEES ILLEGALLY - EDUCATION MINISTRY

By: Siaw M. Bright

The Committee on Education in Ghana's Parliament in a statement put out on 15th February 2023 clarified that the University of Ghana did not charge fees illegally, and the fees levied by the University Management are within the lawful limits authorized by parliament.

This development comes after the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UGSRC) and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) sent a petition to parliament, accusing the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo of charging illegal fees.

A statement signed by Hon. Inusah Mohammed, the Clerk to the Committee on Education in parliament remarked that following a meeting with the Management of the University of Ghana,  the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the Ministry of Education, and the student body, it was resolved that the University Management did not charge any illegal fees.

The statement reads, "The University of Ghana did not charge fees illegally, and the fees charged by the University are within the legal limits approved by Parliament. The Committee acknowledged the current difficult economic situation in the country and its negative impact on the ability of parents/students to pay the newly approved fees. The Committee also agrees with the University on the funding required to fix the deteriorating infrastructure and provide quality education."

The committee however recognized the economic difficulties and recommended that the University management consider a reduction in the 2022/2023 academic year fee schedule.

The committee said, "The Committee, mindful of the country's current economic challenges and the funding requirement for the provision of quality education, resolves that the University take further steps to provide some relief to the students. Consequently, the Committee recommends that the University grants some reduction in the 2022/23 academic year fees and communicate the reduction to the Committee."

Reacting to some of the falsehoods leveled against the University Management, Some individuals have called on the NUGS President to openly apologize to the Vice Chancellor for taking an entrenched position that the University Management is taking students for granted and charging fees illegally.

Despite the prevailing reactions, students have welcomed the news with much calmness as they believe this is a positive development that has cleared the myriad of falsehoods that the Nation's Premier University has encountered for the past months.
