Starting university is a joyful phase in a person's life. However, it can be frustrating at times, particularly for newly admitted university students. Here are some important things you must do as a first-year student at the University of Ghana.

1. Payment of Academic Fees.

Upon getting admission to pursue a course at the University, students must first pay at least fifty percent (50%) of the academic fees cited on the admission letter at the University's approved banks for fee collection or the official secure online payment platform by the university. All information about how and where to pay academic fees is clearly stated on the student's admission letter.

2. Activation of Students' Emails.

Students must refer to the admission letter and follow instructions to activate their UG student email. More so, students who may encounter difficulties in activating the mail should reach out to the IT help desk for support at the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS) located at the University's main campus near the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS).

3. Applying For Accommodation.

Students who are interested in securing campus accommodation must apply for accommodation online via a competitive online allocation system. Also, campus accommodation can be secured manually in some available private hostels on campus such as Bani Hostel, Evandy Hostel, Pent Hostel, and T.F. Hostel - interested students must go to the hostel facility managers in person to secure accommodation. Additionally, off-campus hostels are available to students who may not get campus accommodation. Students can secure off-campus accommodation at places like Madina, Atomic, Firestone, Hatso, Okponglo, and other nearby locations around the university's main or city campus. At all times, students are cautioned not to pay any monies to third persons and should be careful of accommodation fraudsters who offer to help them secure both on-campus and off-campus accommodation.

4. Online  Registration of Courses.

University of Ghana students should take online registration of courses seriously and ensure that the right courses are registered on their sts portal/Mis Web. UGRC and HERC registration is done on the university's portal https://sts.ug.edu.gh/services/

5. Manual Registration of Courses.

After the online registration of courses, students must go to their department or school and register for the courses on the admission letter. For example, if you were offered a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, Political  Science, and Geography it means the student will go to the three listed departments for the manual course registration. The same applies to other courses not mentioned. The manual course registration comes with a fee that differs for each department or school. During the manual course registration, students would be made to write down their contact for WhatsApp group creation - for the purpose of sending important information to students. Freshmen are advised to ask questions for clarification during the manual course registration.

6. On-Campus Hall/Hostel Registration.

After securing accommodation on campus, students must among others make payment for the room they have secured at the approved banks stated on the proof of accommodation letter. Subsequently, students must go to the Hall/Hostel to manually register their secured rooms.

7. Orientation For Freshmen.

All freshmen will be required to take part in a mandatory program of orientation. Specific details of this orientation program will be made available on the University’s website and via students' email. Also, Halls/Hostels, departments, and schools may organize a program of orientation for students. Students are advised to attend these important gatherings.

8. Lecture Schedule/Timetable.

Students should always look for lecture schedules or timetables to guide them as to the time and location of lectures.  The lecture schedule can mostly be found on the department's notice board. Other sources of lecture schedules are on Sakai and official WhatsApp platforms created by departmental executives.
